-This particular article seems like an amazing way to kick off the ethnography. It shows the importance of surfing here in California and specifically right here in Orange County. The article is a nice blend of honoring the past and celebrating the present which shows the ongoing legacy of surfing.

-What we get here with this is amazing testimonies from California college students and the piece is a great groundwork of how to go about my ethnography. It really focuses on the point of unity with surfing which would be a great angle for me to take.

-Surfing lingo seems like a perfect way to really understand the culture and be able to use such lingo in the ethnography.

-Surfing had such a huge impact on pop culture when it first came to California and even spawned it’s own subgenre of art and I want to touch on the scope of this culture and how it reaches into other areas as well.

-When i think of this culture, I think of The Beach Boys and how they embodied this 60s California culture, so their history is crucial when doing research.

-Finally this piece touches on two aspects of the culture back when it originated in the 60s: rebellion and silliness. There was a cathartic nature to surfing with moments of levity and touching on those two aspects is important to understanding surf culture.

  1. Yes, bringing this inquiry into the overarching themes of rebellion (freedom!) and silliness (fun!) would definitely make the universal bell ring in your ethnography. I also like your intent to show the influence of surfing on art. Doesn’t it seem that environment (nature and the landscape) greatly influences, perhaps molds, its surrounding culture?
