- My story is about how auditioning for a musical about Richard Nixon saved my life. By December of freshman year, I was this close to not returning in the spring and probably transferring to Ithaca, but three days before I went back home for good, I auditioned Richard Nixon’s Big Adventure and after getting cast, it made me stay here at Chapman. That show completely changed the life path I was on. It single handedly made me stay at Chapman.
- I’m compelled to this story because I always amaze myself with how one little decision of just auditioning for a musical could make the biggest difference in the whole world to me.
- The major driving point here is to put yourself out there even when maybe you did not want to because it could turn out to be a game changer, the like of which cannot be anticipated.
- The target audience is to everyone in college. I implore them to find something here in school that is completely different from whatever you’re majoring in. Do something you have never ever done before, even it falls flat on your face. College is a time of exploration and everyone has to explore the hell out of this awesome time in our lives.
- I plan to focus on the pathos because it can be so easy to stay in your lane and do something you always planned to do, but to try something you’ve never done before is something I’m passionate about. I had never done theater and i had bombed in past auditions here at Chapman, but I still went out for Nixon, even though there was no reason for me to do that.
- I would touch one the many types of clubs here at Chapman and at all schools and how easy it is to explore.
- What makes this a personal essay is really going into detail about how I wound up in Nixon. Detailing the before, the during, and the after of the musical. It’s a long story that means a lot to me.
- I think this personal essay will be more of a story where the open letter was a call to arms and being a personal thank you to Dr. Fox.
Brendan: I’m picking up the major point of your essay stated here: “one little decision of just auditioning for a musical could make the biggest difference in the whole world to me. The major driving point here is to put yourself out there even when maybe you did not want to because it could turn out to be a game changer, the like of which cannot be anticipated”
And I want to add that it is amazing how one decision can change the entire direction of how our lives unfold and advance. That’s why decisions are so important to living. And it’s also why we should not be afraid to make decisions, and in particular to try something new. We absolutely cannot predict the outcomes of our experiences ahead of time. We have to live them and see where they take us!
