Open Letters Takeaways

Elizabeth brought up the point of details, including both personal experiences of mine and statistics to help back up my point. For this first draft, I definitely kept it more broad and she made the good point about getting more specific and honing on what I’m trying to say in order to make a richer open letter.

I hadn’t thought about the idea of adding statistics, but I know there are number out there that can prove not enough people get the help they need and the people that do are better for it.

I appreciate Nina talking about how vocal I am about mental illnesses. It’s great to see others find the value in being open and free about ourselves.

  1. Brendan, I believe there was a mention in your peer feedback that noted the “kairos” of your situation. It’s been one year since you first met the therapist to whom you’re addressing this letter. That was “then” and this is “now” – and a whole lot of good stuff happened in-between (the course of a year.) So now you want to thank this therapist. I think this is a great specific audience to address that offers potential for a wider surrounding audience.

A great point you make – and I urge you to develop – is how important it is to “own up” to mental health issues. Society does still try to sweep mental health under the carpet. While it’s not as taboo as it once was (no one back in the mid-20th century would admit to having “mental” health problems at one time for fear of egregious retaliations: lobotomy anyone?), and mental health awareness and treatment has come a long way, it still is misunderstood or avoided. Perhaps denial is a big player here. I hereby deny that my mental state is anything but 100% perfect!

Another great point you make is that there are great benefits to therapy and you are living proof of this.

And finally, your goal with this letter is to motivate the audience that surrounds your target audience (the therapist), which is great strategy.
