Wild Tongue Annotations

I love how the title of the piece, the opening line, and the opening situation in the dentist’s office is just one big parallel to the bigger idea of her accent and her language. The phrase “wild tongue” is such a beautiful way to put what she is dealing with.

I always find myself enthralled with cultures I know nothing about and learning about their struggle because otherwise I would never even know that these were issues people faced. It must be difficult to be of Mexican descent, but feel like an outsider as a Chicano and their language. Language should bring together and not divide.

She’s able to shed light on a issue with her people and also give a quick history lesson too of the Chicanos to give more context to her plight and identity crisis. The biggest takeaway that I got from this is even when you have your culture or your religion, or your ethnicity, there can still be people that still don’t belong because they aren’t “jewish enough” or “man enough” or in the author’s case, “Mexican enough” to get the language down.
