Short Essays Annotations

SUPERMAN AND ME:

At the end of the day, literature is a powerful medium. It shaped Sherman into who he is. It inspired him to be a writer, it pushed him harder, it made him sand out in his own culture. The essay goes to show how literature is a boundless, universal language.

DECLINE AND FALL OF ENGLISH MAJOR:

I think Klinkenbog touches on a fascinating subject, especially from her position as an English teacher. I think for a lot of people having English as a major seems odd, as in “English” is such a broad term fr a major. English is a blanket that falls onto so many things that it’s not hard to see why it detracts people. It’s a fixable situation sadly, not those that truly want it will get their major in English.

ONLY DAUGHTER:

I can relate to the author’s story as being an only son growing up with two sisters. It can be lonely sometime in that kind of family since the sisters always gravitate towards each other because of the shared gender. It was interesting to see it from the flipped perspective with an only daughter and in a culture like Mexican culture where family is everything.

DAD:

This is by far the best essay out of the four. How the author went through a whole entire life and the ever changing dynamics in such a short amount of time was heartbreaking and immaculate as the same time. It ends on such a heart wrenching note that set up a few paragraphs prior. It’s blunt and to the point. I could visualize this entire story in my head as it seamlessly went throughout time.
