Open Letter Analysis

OPEN LETTER: https://www.patriots.com/news/view-from-above-an-open-letter-to-nfl-ownership-327771

The issues addressed in this open letter is the countless issues plaguing the NFL including rules that need to be more clear, showing respect to those who kneel during the national anthem, how they handle athletes involved in assault arrests, and overall, fixing the things so the NFL can go back to being great without all the controversies.

The exigence for the writer is the fact that he writes this right before the NFL owners meeting to discuss rules and the state of the league and how to fix it. He makes this letter at a crucial time and the only time a year for change in the NFL.

The persona of the writer is of that of a fan. A person who hates to see the league he loves diminish with so many timely issues. He loves the game he covers and wants it in the best state possible. The purpose here is yes, to fix the NFL, but also the fact that this change can have ripple effects in how other people view these issues when they see the major business of the NFL adapting to the times. It gives hope to the divide in this nation with racial barriers and the Me Too era. The intended audience here is the NFL owners who have the power to make change for a league they too love. The points he make allude to the Jesse James “no catch” call, Ray Rice, and Colin Kaepernick.
